Maheshwar

Maheshwar, meaning ‘great god’, is a city full of festivals and celebrations. The incredibly alluring site of Maheshwar is the reason that it was mentioned in the epics of Ramayana and Mahabharata and movies like Ashoka and episodes of the TV serial Jhansi Ki Rani were shot here. All in all Maheshwar is a culturally prosperous and religious town that would color you in its own colors.

About The Locals: The locals of Maheshwar engage themselves into handloom weaving. Giving employment to women and reviving the town’s textiles, Rehwa Society, an NGO is now famous for having about 130 weavers produce over 100,000 meters of fine fabrics a year.

Sightseeing: Take a holy dip in Narmada, go on a joy boat ride, or just sit and take in the picture perfect view of Narbada with the backdrop of a fort, all at Ahilyabai Ghats. Explore your love for history and ancient architecture by visiting the Queen’s fort and enjoy the architecture of one of the biggest temples of Maheshwar, Kaleshwar temple, overlooking the Ahilyabai Ghats. Do not miss out on the beautiful and heart opening evening aarti at the banks of river Narmada. You should also visit Rajarajeshwara, Vithaleshwara and Ahileshwar temples distinguished by their carved overhanging balconies and intricately worked doorways.

The best months to visit Maheshwar are August to March. Do try and witness the activities of the Rehwa society to indulge yourself in the beautiful colors of their hand loomed saris. Also, do not miss out on the evening aartis.
